[ information ]
The Calcium Collective is an open-ended ensemble of musicians and non-musicians who perform improvised music. The fundamental concept behind the Calcium Collective is to emphasize the inherent creativity and impact of spontaneity, regardless of traditional technique. This album is the first in an ongoing series of experimental compositions.
On this album, you will hear what is essentially three different performances of one piece of music. Rather than defining this music in classical notation, it has been expressed in the form of a set of written guidelines. Therefore, this is a composition without any defined notes, rhythm, key or time.
In each performance of this piece, a set of musicians improvised along to a recording of a drum performance in free time. In keeping with the spirit of live performance, the musicians did not listen to this recording before their improvisation and were only permitted to record one take. Because each musician worked in isolation from the others, they could only respond to the recording of the drums.
The musicians on this recording self-produced their own respective instrumental tracks in different locations around the world. The digitally-recorded tracks were left unedited and were collected via the internet.
